Sanremo, March 2008.

Saturday March 22nd, Easter’s eve, the 99th edition of the Super Classic Spring Cup will take place.

It’s one of the most famous and attended races of the year, it’s the event that officially opens the bicycle racing season.

It’s an important test for all the professional bike riders that will face it, a race that has often marked the career of many athletes.

The 2008 edition will be the 99th being run, though 101 years have gone by since its existence and in this particular edition the race will see a particular change in its course.

The finish line won’t be placed in via Roma, just like every year, but on the lungomare Italo Calvino instead, right by Carlo Dapporto square.

This change is due to a problem of urban road networks caused by a big construction site in corso Mombello (right by via Roma’s finish line) that can cause difficulties in placing all the logistic/organization structures.

For this reason the organizers together with the City of Flowers City Hall have decided to move the finish line to another place.

It’s not sure whether this novelty will be followed throughout the years but for sure the year 2008 will be mostly an experiment.

The change in the course will take place inside the city: after the Poggio it will go on through corso Cavallotti, rondo Garibaldi, via Fiume and corso Orazio Raimondo.

From there instead of going on to via Roma it will turn left along via Nino Bixio, Vittorio Veneto gardens and the lungomare Italo Calvino to reach the finish line at the end of Carlo Dapporto square.
